2026 Dates
Join Ronnie Frey from Doorways of Chicago for a special tour through the Fine Arts Building. Nestled right in the heart of downtown, it has been a creative hub since 1898, and stepping inside feels like a magical step back in time.
Wander the halls, ride one of the city’s last hand-operated elevators, and climb the grand staircase that’s seen generations of artists, musicians, and writers come and go. You’ll hear stories of the legends who once worked here—think Frank Lloyd Wright, Lorado Taft and the Leyendecker Brothers—and get a feel for the building’s ongoing role as a living, breathing arts colony.
Originally built as a showroom and factory for the Studebaker Carriage Company, the building was reimagined into a space for dreamers, makers, and creators—and it still buzzes with that same energy today.
If you love architecture, history, and a good behind-the-scenes peek into the creative world, this tour’s for you. Bring your curiosity—and maybe your sketchbook.
Check-in details
Meeting Address: 410 S. Michigan Ave Chicago IL 60605
Fine Arts Building
If the weather is nice out we will meet on the sidewalk just outside the main door. During inclement weather, we will meet in the first lobby just inside the main door of the building.
Getting around Chicago can be tricky, so we recommend arriving 5-10 minutes early to make sure you’re all set. The tour will start promptly, and after that, it will be difficult to reach the tour guide via messaging or calling.
Please note: there won’t be any restroom stops during the tour, so plan accordingly!
What to bring
It is suggested that you wear comfy shoes as we will be using the stairs a lot throughout the tour. Additionally, there is a lot of standing on this tour.
Special requirements
Children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent.

A heads-up: this tour includes several staircases (mostly going down), so it may not be the best fit for folks with mobility challenges or anyone pregnant.
